Hiking South Fork Moormans River to Blue Hole

A short walk with a waterfall at the endThis is a 3.

This is a 3.0-mile out-and-back from Moormans River Parking Area to Blue Hole on the South Fork Moormans River. The broad, wooded track climbs gradually along the river, gaining about 350 feet over the 1.5-mile approach. Allow around two hours, including time to find the pool and scramble down to the water. It suits a river walk more than a summit-view hike.

At the shared gravel lot at the end of Sugar Hollow Road, take the east-side silver gate for Blue Hole. The west-side red gate leads to the separate North Fork and Big Branch Falls route. There are no trail signs at the split, so choose before setting off. The broad path reaches the North Fork crossing around 0.1 mile and the South Fork around 0.8 mile. A smaller pool appears near 1.4 miles; Blue Hole is about 1.5 miles from the lot, below the path on the right. It is easy to walk past if you keep your eyes only on the track.

Down to the waterBlue Hole is a rocky basin beneath a small cascade.

Blue Hole is a rocky basin beneath a small cascade. From path level the pool is partly hidden; the view opens once you scramble down to the riverbank. The descent is rough rock rather than a built spur, and stones at the stream crossings can be slippery. Take your time and skip the scramble if the footing is beyond your comfort. For a photo, include the pool and the ledges around the falls so the cascade has some scale.

Access and preparationUse the designated gravel lot; it serves both Moormans River hikes.
