A permit-only night between two volcanoes

Degollada de Pico Viejo is a 310-by-190-metre bivouac zone in the saddle between Pico Viejo and Teide, at 3,061–3,094 metres. Its pockets among rock outcrops and pumice flats make it a remote overnight stop for people crossing the high trails. This is a permit-only bivouac, not a casual place to camp.

Pumice after the lavaThe saddle is also called Degollada de Chahorra.

The saddle is also called Degollada de Chahorra. On PNT-23, dark lava gives way to pumice near the junction. Continuing on PNT-09 takes you past the south side of Pico Viejo, whose crater is about 800 metres wide, and toward the Narices del Teide vents from the park’s 1798 eruption; those features are farther along the route, not part of the bivouac area itself.
