More about Altavista Refuge

A refuge on TeideAltavista is a high-mountain refuge at 3,260 m, and the only refuge in Teide National Park.

Altavista is a high-mountain refuge at 3,260 m, and the only refuge in Teide National Park. Its main draw is an overnight stop before the long final walk to Teide’s summit at dawn. This is a booked mountain stay, not a drive-up attraction; access to the indoor refuge for hikers without an overnight booking is unclear, so confirm before relying on it for shelter.

From the Montaña Blanca trailhead on TF-21, Trail 7 is a steep, rocky climb of about 4 to 5 hours. The shorter approach from the cable-car upper station takes about an hour via Trails 11 and 7, but the cable car can stop because of weather or technical problems. An overnight booking includes managed access permits for the refuge and summit route; check the operator’s current permit and equipment requirements before setting out. The official gear list calls for at least 1.5 litres of water.

The refurbished refuge has two buildings around a courtyard, three shared dormitories and space for up to 49 people, with a one-night limit. Bring a sleeping bag; bedding isn’t provided. There’s a shared lounge and dining room, toilets and vending machines for water, hot drinks and packaged snacks, but no showers or restaurant service. You can bring food to heat. The access isn’t adapted for reduced mobility, and pets aren’t allowed.

The front terrace looks over the volcanic craters and plateau of Las Cañadas. At dawn, Teide throws its famous triangular shadow out toward the Atlantic. For a photo that shows the scale of the scene, keep some of the rough volcanic ground or caldera rim in the foreground instead of framing only the distant horizon.

A shelter built for astronomyThe refuge began as a rudimentary shelter established in 1856 by Scottish Astronomer Royal…

The refuge began as a rudimentary shelter established in 1856 by Scottish Astronomer Royal Charles Piazzi Smyth. He and his wife Jessie used the high, clear air for observations of stars, Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon, and for early stereoscopic photographs. His 1858 account helped put high-altitude astronomy on the map. George Graham Toler enlarged and reinforced the shelter in 1891–92 for researchers, photographers and mountaineers.

Running off-gridThe 2026 refurbishment added solar power with batteries and wastewater treatment.

The 2026 refurbishment added solar power with batteries and wastewater treatment. This remote refuge manages its own energy and water systems, so it’s a very different stay from a hotel at the bottom of the mountain.
