Peace Hill is a small hilltop ruin of a stone wind-powered sugar mill on St. John’s North Shore, between Hawksnest and Trunk Bay. It’s a good quick stop if you want a close look at one of the island’s plantation ruins and a broad view across the bays. From the small roadside lot on North Shore Road, the climb is roughly 0.1 mile each way and takes about five minutes. Loose stones make the short uphill walk feel rougher than the distance suggests.

A grassy clearing surrounds the compact mill tower. Its deep stone arches give you a good way to take in the structure: step just inside one and frame the bright clearing through the opening. The ruins are modest beside St. John’s larger plantation sites, so this is a brief stop rather than a long exploration.

The windmill belonged to Denis Bay Plantation, part of the Danish-era sugar industry on St. John. That industry depended on enslaved labor. The remaining stonework is a small but direct piece of that history.

A statue of Christ of the Caribbean once stood beside the mill. Lt. Col. Julius Wadsworth erected it in 1953; Hurricane Marilyn toppled it in 1995, and a plaque marks the story. Wadsworth donated the Denis Bay land to the national park in 1975, and the hill’s name is associated with his peace advocacy.
