Pros & cons
PROS
- Multiple short spurs to panoramic ruins and overlooks without adding huge mileage
- Easy hike‑and‑snorkel combo with Waterlemon Bay right at the start
CONS
- South‑side descent to Coral Bay is very steep, loose, and less scenic
- Limited shade makes midday heat punishing; carry extra water
Park on the Annaberg/Leinster Bay (Waterlemon Bay) side and walk to the east end of the beach to start. For a one‑way, arrange pickup near the Moravian Church in Coral Bay.
Exposed, hot ridge with little shade; steep, loose gravel on the Coral Bay side; slick rock after rain; some overgrowth; bring ample water, sun protection, and bug spray.
Overview
Linking the east end of Waterlemon Bay (Leinster Bay) to the paved road by the Moravian Church in Coral Bay, this ridge route is all about views and history—with a workout. Officially 1.8 miles one way; most hikers do it as a ~3.2‑mile out‑and‑back from the Waterlemon side. Expect a dry, sun‑exposed climb on rocky tread and a notably steep, loose descent toward Coral Bay.
Route and Highlights
From Waterlemon Bay beach, the trail climbs past historic ruins (one with a photogenic arch) and quick spurs to viewpoints. Short side trails reach the Murphy Great House and the Windy Hill ruins—both deliver sweeping Caribbean panoramas. A spur also leads to an old Danish guardhouse site positioned above key channels. Around 0.7 mile from the Waterlemon side, you’ll meet the Brown Bay Trail; a left turn drops about 0.8 mile to a quiet beach if you want to add a swim. The main route eventually follows a rough road down to Coral Bay.
Trail Experience
Count on steep ups and downs, uneven rock, and hot sun. The northern half (from Waterlemon) is the crowd‑pleaser for scenery and ruins; many hikers turn around before the very steep, rocky south‑side road to Coral Bay, which is less scenic. Surfaces can be slippery after rain, and some stretches get overgrown—sturdy shoes and attention to footing pay off.
Nature and History
You’re walking a ridge through dry upland forest: look for lizards, hermit crabs, deer, goats, donkeys, and the occasional butterflies. Down along the beach approach, sea turtles are often spotted. The ruins along the way tie directly to the island’s plantation era, with the guardhouse historically used to watch the channels.
Best Time to Hike
Year‑round, but go early (or late) to beat the heat and get softer light on the bays and the British Virgin Islands beyond. Midday can be a scorcher with limited shade.
Tips and Logistics
- Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and bug spray. Trekking poles help on the loose south‑side descent.
- If you only want the good stuff, make it an out‑and‑back from Waterlemon to the ridge/ruins spurs and skip the Coral Bay drop.
- Snorkel add‑on: pair the hike with Waterlemon Bay—carry gear and assess currents before crossing channels.
- Dogs are allowed on leash on the trail; pets aren’t permitted on park beaches.
Parking
Most start from the north: park by the Annaberg/Leinster Bay (Waterlemon Bay) side and walk the shoreline to the east end of the beach to pick up the trail. For a one‑way, arrange a pick‑up in Coral Bay near the Moravian Church or plan a shuttle/second vehicle.
