Carl-von-Stahl-Haus is a staffed Austrian Alpine Club refuge at 1,736 metres on Torrener Joch, where the ridge meets the Austria–Germany border. It serves hikers in the Berchtesgaden Alps, including people on the Kleine and Große Reibn routes. Make time for it if you want a proper mountain-hut meal, an overnight stop, or a base for a longer tour; this is a destination reached on foot, not a roadside pullout.

Choose your approachFrom Jennerbahn’s summit station, the listed walk takes about 45 minutes.

From Jennerbahn’s summit station, the listed walk takes about 45 minutes. Starting at the middle station near Hinterbrand takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, while the approach from Königssee is about three hours. Those are walking estimates, not guarantees. From Hinterbrand, the Kleine Reibn reaches the hut via Mitterkaseralm and Jennersattel, then continues toward the Blumengarten karst plateau and Schneibstein on a more demanding mountain path. In winter, approaches are ski tours or snowshoe trips rather than ordinary summer hikes.

The hut’s dining rooms and terrace make it a worthwhile stop even if you aren’t staying overnight. The kitchen serves traditional alpine food, with Kaiserschmarrn and Kaspressknödel as named house specialties. Overnight guests can choose between rooms and dormitory bunks; arrange a bed ahead if the hut is a key stage of your trip.

Look toward the peaksThe terrace looks out toward the Tennengebirge, the Steinerne Meer and Watzmann.

The terrace looks out toward the Tennengebirge, the Steinerne Meer and Watzmann. If you arrive around sunrise, the view between the Tennengebirge and Watzmann is the one to wait for. Clouds and season decide how much of that panorama you’ll get.

Why it carries Carl von Stahl’s nameAn earlier refuge on the pass burned after a lightning strike in 1918.

An earlier refuge on the pass burned after a lightning strike in 1918. Carl von Stahl, an Austrian emigrant who built a textile business in America, funded the replacement hut. Construction began in 1921 and it opened on July 22, 1923; his widow attended after he died. The hut has been run year-round since winter 1924/25.
