Lyrebird Dell

Lyrebird Dell is a sandstone and creekside destination on the 1.7 km Grade 3 walking loop near Leura. The loop takes about 45 to 90 minutes. It follows Gordon Creek to a large sandstone overhang, then continues past a small waterfall and pool. This is a bush walk rather than a drive-up lookout; the steep descent at the start is the main thing to plan for.

Start at Gordon Falls picnic area. The track drops by steep stairs into Gordon Creek, then passes through a small fern-filled canyon with hanging swamps and Pool of Siloam. From there, climb back toward the signpost and follow the creek to Lyrebird Dell. The path crosses the water on small bridges before reaching the sandstone shelter and, just beyond it, a waterfall and plunge pool. The loop returns to Gordon Falls Reserve.

The larger sandstone overhang has a long association with the Traditional Owners of the area. The visitor information gives no more specific cultural account, so there is no need to guess at details beyond that connection.

Lyrebirds are often seen scratching through leaf litter along the track. On misty autumn mornings, look for silvereyes or mistletoe birds moving through the undergrowth.

From Leura, follow Leura Mall, turn left onto Gordon Road, then right onto Lone Pine Avenue; the entrance is a short way along. Street parking is available near the start, though it can be limited on busy weekends. Gordon Falls Reserve has toilets, picnic facilities and a playground. Bring drinking water. Dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted, except certified assistance animals.
