Lyrebird Dell walking track

Overview

This is a short, richly textured bushwalk on Leura’s escarpment that packs a lot into a small package. The common circuit is about 1.1 miles total, starting and finishing at Gordon Falls picnic area, linking Pool of Siloam and the Lyrebird Dell cave. Expect 45–90 minutes depending on pace and photo stops. It’s graded moderate (Grade 3): short, but with a steep stair descent into the gully and a climb back out, plus uneven natural surfaces.

What You’ll See

You drop quickly into a cool, ferny gorge carved by Gordon Creek, with hanging swamps, mossy rock, and that hush you only get in shaded gullies. The Pool of Siloam is the star—an intimate waterfall and natural pool framed by ferns. Continue to Lyrebird Dell for a broad sandstone cave/overhang with long‑standing Aboriginal cultural significance. The sandstone here (classic Blue Mountains) is sculpted into caves and ledges by water over millennia, and the gully stays pleasantly cool even on hot days.

Wildlife and Atmosphere

This track is well‑loved by birders—Superb Lyrebirds are commonly seen scratching in the leaf litter, especially early. You may also spot small forest birds flitting through the canopy. The walk is popular with families, yet the gully often feels tranquil once you’re below the picnic area.

Expectations and Trade‑offs

While this is quintessential Blue Mountains gorge walking, the track itself is mostly enclosed by forest, so don’t expect big valley panoramas. For vistas, pair the walk with nearby lookouts like Gordon Falls or Golf Links Lookout before or after. Surfaces can be damp and slippery after rain, and the stair sections are steep—short but punchy. Facilities (toilets, picnic tables) are at the Gordon Falls picnic area; there’s nothing on the track itself. No dogs.

Best Time to Hike

Autumn through spring brings mild weather, fresh growth, and active birdlife. Summer can be lovely too—the gully’s shade and spray keep it cool—but take extra care if it’s been raining. Winter is quieter and atmospheric, though the gullies can feel cold and damp. For lyrebirds and calmer conditions, aim for early mornings on weekdays.
