Mountains-to-Sea Trail

This 9.9-mile one-way point-to-point stretch of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail follows the Blue Ridge Parkway from US 74A (MP 384.8) to the Parkway access road at the French Broad River (MP 393.7–393.8). It links forested ridges and open views with frequent Parkway crossings; the west end connects with the Shut-In Trail near French Broad Overlook. Allow about 5.5 hours for the full route and arrange a shuttle; this is not a loop, and the stored line follows the one-way corridor once.

Trail tread ranges from moderate to strenuous, with rocky and rooty sections, steady climbs and descents, and an elevation profile from about 620 m at the French Broad end to about 758 m on the route’s highest sampled point. Use hiking poles if helpful and carry water; do not count on untreated stream water.

The Parkway setting brings road noise and crossings but also easy access to overlooks, the Asheville Visitor Center, and other trail access points. Fall color and spring wildflowers are especially rewarding; ridges can be cooler and weather can change quickly. Bears and other wildlife are possible; keep food secured and give animals space.

For a point-to-point hike, arrange a shuttle between US 74A and the French Broad access and park only in designated areas. Dogs are allowed but must remain leashed and under control. Check official Parkway and MST updates before setting out for current access conditions; this entry intentionally omits temporary status claims.
