Before you go

Parking

Start at the South Shore Trailhead parking lot on the east shore of Two Medicine Lake.

Best time to go

Walk back the same way for the full seven miles. A concession boat from the west shore can make a different return when it is operating, but that option is not included in this route’s distance. Glacier does not allow pets on trails. In early season, check trail status before relying on crossings: seasonal bridges begin going in around late May and are generally installed by mid-July, and creek water can be cold and high.

Safety

The route crosses Aster Creek and a suspension bridge over Paradise Creek. Seasonal bridges may be absent early in the hiking season; check current trail status. A higher falls view uses an informal, bushy and exposed path.

“Two Medicine Lake is ahead, with Sinopah Mountain rising across the water. You can enjoy that view from the developed shore without taking on a big hike, so I’d stop here even for a short visit.”

Hiking Rockwell Falls Trail

The hike to Rockwell FallsRockwell Falls is a 7-mile out-and-back from the South Shore Trailhead on Two Medicine Lake.

Rockwell Falls is a 7-mile out-and-back from the South Shore Trailhead on Two Medicine Lake. The park lists 3.5 miles one way and 375 feet of gain; allow about four hours with stops. It is a long but fairly gradual walk for a pair of cascades at the end, with lakeshore, beaver ponds, forest and meadows along the way.

A scenic first mileJust over a quarter-mile in, a side path reaches Paradise Point’s small beach, with views…

Just over a quarter-mile in, a side path reaches Paradise Point’s small beach, with views across the lake toward Rising Wolf Mountain. Leave that spur out for the listed distance. Around half a mile in, the trail passes beaver ponds, then continues through lodgepole pine and Douglas fir with meadows between the trees. Moose are sometimes reported near the ponds, especially early and late in the day; treat a sighting as a bonus.

Follow the right branchesCross Aster Creek at about 1.

Cross Aster Creek at about 1.1 miles and continue straight past the Aster Falls and Aster Park Overlook spur. At about 2.3 miles, a suspension bridge crosses Paradise Creek. At the 2.6-mile junction, turn left onto Two Medicine Pass Trail for Rockwell Falls. The South Shore trail to the right heads toward the west-shore dock and other destinations.

At the fallsJust under 3.

Just under 3.5 miles from the start, cross a footbridge; the trail bends right shortly after and reaches the base of the falls. Rockwell Falls has two cascades, each roughly 30 to 40 feet high. The nearer one is easiest to see; the second sits about 100 feet behind it and is partly hidden by trees. Include some of the basin and rock wall in a photo so the frame shows where the falls sit in the gorge. A higher view uses an informal, bushy and exposed path; it is not needed to reach the falls.
