“Two Medicine Lake is ahead, with Sinopah Mountain rising across the water. You can enjoy that view from the developed shore without taking on a big hike, so I’d stop here even for a short visit.”

Hiking Two Medicine Pass Trail

Two Medicine Pass Trail is a strenuous out-and-back from South Shore Trailhead on Two Medicine Lake. The mapped route climbs one way past Rockwell Falls and Cobalt Lake to the pass ridge; 16.0 miles is the full return distance over the same path. Expect a full day and about 2,500 feet of climbing. The trail continues down into Park Creek beyond the ridge, but this outing turns around at the pass.

The approach threads lodgepole and spruce forest, small meadows, and beaver-pond country before joining the South Shore route toward the pass. It crosses Aster Creek and later a suspension bridge over Paradise Creek before reaching Rockwell Falls. The falls have two drops of roughly 30 to 40 feet, with part of the lower scene screened by trees. Beyond them the grade steepens through switchbacks. Paradise Point is a short optional detour near the start; it is not included in the pass-route mileage.

The climbing trail opens into a glacially carved valley between Painted Tepee Peak and Sinopah Mountain, with subalpine meadows and seasonal wildflowers on the way to Cobalt Lake. The lake rests below Mount Rockwell and Chief Lodgepole Peak. It makes a worthwhile shorter turnaround: the South Shore approach is about 5.8 miles one way to Cobalt Lake, or 11.6 miles round trip, without the final climb to the pass.

The pass and the returnAbove Cobalt Lake the path climbs toward the ridge below Chief Lodgepole Peak.

Above Cobalt Lake the path climbs toward the ridge below Chief Lodgepole Peak. At Two Medicine Pass, the view opens west over Park Creek toward Vigil Peak, Battlement Mountain and Statuary Mountain, and back northeast toward Cobalt Lake and Two Medicine Lake. The saddle is the turnaround for this hike; the route drops steeply into Upper Park Creek if you continue beyond it. The return retraces the full climb, so keep energy for the descent and the long walk back.

Conditions and rulesThe upper ridge is exposed and can be very windy.

The upper ridge is exposed and can be very windy. Snow at high elevations and seasonal bridge conditions can change how far the route is safely walkable; check current park trail reports before setting out. Pets are not allowed on Glacier National Park trails. The ten-hour duration is a planning estimate based on the full distance, climbing and ordinary stops, not a published route time.
