Trail guide
PNT 01 La Fortaleza is a 5.48 km (3.4 mi) point-to-point hike from El Portillo Visitor Centre to La Cuesta de La Fortaleza, across the high volcanic country of Teide National Park. Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes one way. The trail crosses pale pumice slopes and highland scrub before reaching the long rust-red wall of La Fortaleza. Choose it when you want a substantial walk to a striking geological landmark, with time to take in the volcanic ground along the way. The official finish is at the base of the escarpment; scrambling to the top is outside the marked route.
The signed PNT 01 route heads northwest from the visitor centre through Cañada de Los Guancheros. The official description calls it low difficulty, with little overall elevation gain, but it stays at roughly 1,900 to 2,084 metres. Loose stones, uneven ground and steep slopes need attention underfoot, and the altitude can make an easy-rated walk feel more demanding. Dark-green markers carry the PNT 01 code. Follow them and stay on the established path. Several signed trails connect in this area, so check the route code at junctions.
Pale mounds of pumice along the route came from eruptions of Montaña Blanca. Near La Fortaleza, the scenery shifts to the massif's reddish rock and plants adapted to this high plateau: Teide white broom, codeso, Canary Islands juniper and Canary Island pine. The park describes the rusty-brown wall as a remnant of the ancient Cañadas Edifice. That makes the finish more than a viewpoint: it is a surviving piece of the older volcanic structure that shaped this part of Tenerife.
The published distance is one way. La Cuesta de La Fortaleza is accessible only on foot, so arrange your return before setting out. Retracing the same line makes the walk about 10.96 km (6.8 mi) round trip; budget roughly 4½ hours of walking, plus stops. El Portillo Visitor Centre has public parking and toilets, and buses 348 and 342 stop there. Its exhibits explain how the landscape formed and how native plants and animals adapted to the park, useful context before you set off. The official route is free and does not require a reservation. The four-hectare El Portillo Botanical Garden is a separate stop beside the visitor centre, with a living display of native high-altitude plants.
Give yourself time at the finish to take in the escarpment. For a photo, include some of the pale pumice and low scrub in the foreground; that contrast gives the broad rusty wall a sense of scale. If the one-way commitment does not fit your day, the garden is a shorter nearby alternative.
