El Portillo Botanical Garden is a four-hectare living collection beside El Portillo Visitor Centre, also known as Jardín Botánico Wolfredo Wildpret. It represents more than 75% of Teide National Park’s vascular plant species, including high-mountain plants that are difficult to find along the park’s usual routes. It’s a good stop if you want a closer look at the island’s native flora without committing to a long hike.

The garden has more than a kilometre of paths, about half of them accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. A fully adapted linear route is roughly 200 metres long and averages about 1.5 metres wide, a practical short option if accessibility matters. Some trails continue beyond the garden into the wider park, so follow the garden route markers if you’re planning a brief visit.

Teide from the gardenThe paths lead to several viewing platforms.

The paths lead to several viewing platforms. From the west end, the view takes in Teide’s eastern face, with Montaña Blanca and Pico Cabra in front and Risco de La Fortaleza farther back. Another platform faces the sea of clouds when conditions bring one. The garden route also passes Portillo Bajo, a rocky promontory in the pine area whose position once let people watch travelers entering the summit route by Camino de Chasna.

More than a displayThe garden also has a conservation role.

The garden also has a conservation role. Its germination chambers and germplasm bank support a program to recover endangered plants, alongside its work to display, interpret, research and propagate Teide’s high-mountain flora.
