Trail guide
This is the El Portillo–Montaña Blanca loop: 12.4 miles (19.9 km), about 6 to 6½ hours, with roughly 750 m of climbing. It leaves El Portillo Visitor Centre on PNT 01, follows PNT 06 to the Huevos del Teide and Montaña Blanca, takes the PNT 07.1 branch to Alto de Montaña Blanca, then returns on PNT 22 and PNT 01. The stored distance includes that high branch and the connecting trail; it does not include the separate climb to La Rambleta.
From the visitor centre, PNT 01 and PNT 06 share a path for about 20 minutes before PNT 06 turns near Roque del Peral. Keep on PNT 06 past Montaña de los Tomillos to the high junction at Montaña Blanca. Take PNT 07.1 to Alto de Montaña Blanca, return to the junction, then turn onto PNT 22 for the return toward PNT 01. PNT 07.1 is a separate, free branch; the longer PNT 07 ascent toward La Rambleta requires a prior reservation, so do not continue onto that climb.
The PNT 06 climb crosses pale pumice deposits and gains about 490 m. Its middle section passes the dark cone of Montaña de los Tomillos; higher up, vegetation thins and the path becomes wind-exposed. Loose stones, uneven ground and steep slopes make the upper section slower than the distance alone suggests. PNT 22 returns over mostly compacted pumice, with a steeper part high on the route.
The dark rounded boulders are lava accretion balls: fragments of cooled lava gathered layers as they rolled across still-moving lava. They stand out against the pale pumice on Montaña Blanca’s slopes. The PNT 07.1 branch reaches about 2,740 m and opens views across the park and the island’s southern slopes. The black rocks against the light ground are the route’s signature view.
PNT 06 follows an old footpath used by early Teide explorers and by people collecting sulphur and ice on ascents of the mountain. Codeso and Teide white broom grow on the lower pumice slopes; the Teide violet is found in the high, windy stretch near Montaña Blanca.
Start at El Portillo Visitor Centre on the TF-21 and join PNT 01 beside the centre. The loop stays above 2,000 m and reaches 2,740 m, so wind, cold and sun can matter even when conditions feel mild lower down. No water point along the route was confirmed; carry enough for the full outing. Ordinary pets are not allowed in Teide National Park; guide dogs are excepted.
