Overview

About La Tarta Viewpoint

Why stop

  • A close-up look at vivid volcanic layers
  • Two viewpoints show different sides of the landscape

Heads up

  • Haze and cloud can hide the broader view
At La Tarta 2, a sloping roadside cut exposes bands of volcanic material in pale, red, ochre and dark shades. The park describes the layers as volcanic deposits from periods far apart, with a similar shape. Their colors and stripes give the place its name: la tarta, or “the cake.” You can see the feature from the roadside stop without a long approach.

“You're approaching La Tarta, where bands of pale, red, ochre and dark volcanic material stripe a roadside slope. The name means the cake, and those layers come from deposits laid down far apart in time.”

La Tarta is a pair of roadside viewpoints on the TF-24, at km 31.8 and 31.9. La Tarta 2 is the stop for the striking layered slope; at La Tarta 1 you get a different, broader view. They’re easy to fold into a drive between La Laguna and El Portillo, with parking at the marked stops. Use the pullouts and watch for traffic; both viewpoints sit beside a mountain road.

At La Tarta 1, look into a small ravine where runoff has worn the summit material; La Palma lies beyond it. The wider view toward Teide is a second reason to pull over. Sunset and a sea of clouds are popular draws, but the clouds are never guaranteed, and haze can soften the view. If the horizon is hazy, the close-up bands at La Tarta 2 are still worth a look.
