Brown Bay Beach

Brown Bay is a narrow beach on St. John’s north shore, tucked below wooded hills near the island’s eastern end. Its shallow entry and broad seagrass bed make it a worthwhile swim and snorkel stop, but expect an undeveloped shoreline rather than a groomed resort beach. Reach it by trail or boat; boats may visit, but anchoring is prohibited.

The shorter land approach follows Brown Bay Trail from East End Road; another route comes east from Leinster Bay and continues past the Johnny Horn Trail junction. The walk rises early before dropping to the shore, so bring water, snacks, sun protection and insect repellent. Parking at the East End trailhead is a small roadside pullout. No public toilet, drinking water or food service was identified at the beach, so plan to be self-sufficient.

A wide, shallow seagrass bed fills the middle of the bay, with conch and other small invertebrates. Gorgonians grow to the east; the fringing reef toward Leinster Bay can hold staghorn coral and fish. The water and reef edges are the main reason to bring a mask. For a phone photo, include the curve of the narrow shore and the wooded headland; a close crop of the sand misses the tucked-away bay setting.

Overgrown masonry behind the western end is associated with eighteenth-century sugar works, including a horse mill, boiling house and dwelling. Earlier estates grew cotton before lands were combined into the Brownsbay sugar estate; some archaeological site boundaries and attributions remain uncertain. The landscape also carries the history of enslaved people and the 1733–34 uprising, which sharply changed life and cultivation around the bay. Stay off the fragile masonry and leave artifacts where they are.
