Before you go

Best time to go

Spring through autumn suits this base best, when the estate walks and long evenings pay off. Early mornings are the prize: soft light across the parkland, few people on the paths, and the best window for photographing the house and Cascade before day visitors arrive. Weekdays are calmer than weekends, and the site books up well ahead for warm-weather school holidays.

Pitches and facilities

Expect around 120 hardstanding pitches, including standard and super electric pitches plus a smaller number of serviced and premium serviced plots. Facilities run to two heated toilet blocks with controllable showers, an accessible sanitary/shower room, laundry, a dog shower, motorhome and chemical toilet service points, an information room, gas sales and a small shop. There is chargeable Wi-Fi, table tennis, a children's play area and an off-road dog walk on or directly from the site. Dogs are welcome; tents are not accepted.

“If you visit Chatsworth's garden, make time for the Rock Garden. After a trip to the Alps, the sixth Duke wanted a piece of that landscape at home.”

More about Chatsworth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite

Why stay hereThis is a caravan and motorhome site tucked into an old walled garden on the Chatsworth Estate,…

This is a caravan and motorhome site tucked into an old walled garden on the Chatsworth Estate, with a gate leading straight out into the grounds. That access is the whole point: you can walk from your pitch into the 1,000-acre park, follow riverside and hillside paths, and reach Chatsworth House, the formal gardens and the Cascade on foot rather than driving and parking. There is a farm shop nearby too.

What to do from the pitchWalk the estate parkland directly from the site gate, with deer, ducks and pheasants often…
  • Walk the estate parkland directly from the site gate, with deer, ducks and pheasants often around the park (nothing guaranteed).
  • Visit Chatsworth House and its gardens as a walking day rather than a drive.
  • Stroll into Baslow, roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk, where the closest small supermarket is about a mile away.
  • Take on the longer walk to Bakewell if you want a proper day on foot.

The approach is a private single-track road with passing places, so take it slowly and be ready to give way, especially towing. Arrivals can bottleneck at reception when several units land at once, so allow time and patience. BBQs are permitted, and the walled-garden layout means pitches are set out close together even though the site itself feels quiet.

Honest drawbacksIt sits at the pricier end for a club-style site, and you are paying for the location.

It sits at the pricier end for a club-style site, and you are paying for the location. Some pitches are tight or heavily shaded by trees, so ask about size if you have a long outfit or want sun. Rooks start early and can be a genuine alarm clock in the trees around the walled garden. Path lighting is dim in places with obstructions to watch for after dark, so bring a torch. Facilities at Chatsworth House itself are not campsite amenities, and the site is for caravans and motorhomes only.
