Oyster Peak Route

Oyster Peak is a difficult, full-day alpine scramble in Banff's Skoki backcountry. The route starts at Fish Creek Trailhead near Lake Louise Ski Area, climbs the Temple access road, then follows the established Skoki approach over Boulder Pass and past Ptarmigan Lake before descending toward Baker Lake. From the Baker Lake area, leave the maintained trail and follow a faint, rocky route toward Oyster Peak's summit.

This is an out-and-back route with the physical corridor stored once from Fish Creek Trailhead to the summit. The mapped corridor is about 10.9 miles one way; plan on about 21.7 miles (34.9 km) total for the return. Most parties should budget roughly 11.5 hours, with a long approach, intervening descent and climb around the Skoki lakes, and a committing summit scramble.

The approach passes through forest, larch meadows, Boulder Pass, Ptarmigan Lake, and Baker Lake before entering rougher alpine terrain. The summit section involves route-finding, loose rock and scree, boulder hopping, and exposed ridge travel. Views extend across Skoki Mountain, Fossil Mountain, Ptarmigan Peak, Baker Lake, and the surrounding Rockies.

Fish Creek Trailhead is the customary public start. There is no public vehicle access beyond the gate, so expect the initial access-road walk. This is an unmaintained alpine scramble, not a marked hiking trail; navigation skill, scrambling experience, sturdy footwear, layers, food, water, and an immediately accessible bear spray are essential. Weather can change quickly above treeline. A Parks Canada pass is required, and backcountry camping at Baker Lake or another Skoki campground requires the applicable reservation and permit. Dogs may be allowed on leash in the park, but this exposed scramble is a poor choice for pets.
